Not really sure I get your point about advanced stats. They match up precisely with how the game went. Their primary use is to ignore actual goals scored and give you an idea of what should've happened. The Flames should've won 6-2 and the number one reason they didn't is because of Oettinger, which is evident in the advanced stat of goals saved above expected.

You look at the advanced stats from tonight's game and you know exactly what happened. Your OT stats are also off. The Corsi was 20-15 Flames, scoring chances 14-5 Flames, and high danger chances 6-1 Flames.

Yeah, it seems naturalstattrick adjusted their stats a few minutes ago. Have some editing to do! Thanks for the heads up!

My point in the piece is that “Should have happened” doesn’t mean much. Especially when it’s just based on a model containing only x amount of variables. While each agency keeps their model fairly under wraps, it’s probably fair to assume even such factors as fatigue, injury and systems still don’t find their way into those. That’s just my opinion though.

Sure, but that's always the case. Watching a game is always going to be the best way to judge a team, but advanced stats do a pretty good job of analyzing what happens in a game. A good enough job that you can get a pretty good idea of how a team played for a game, a week, or the season by looking over the game(s) log on naturalstattrick.

If you want to make the argument that advanced stats are useless and overrated in general, I can understand that, but what makes them more useless on a game-by-game basis? Stats are always better with more data, but knowing stuff like shot attempts, where those shots came from, and scoring chances in a period or game still tells you a lot.

tough being up 4 hours after hockey and at work but really what a game. Glad the flames got what they deserved, its true all the advanced stats look great when your not actually say watching the game. The flames for the most part were on the Stars like a bad habit and the goals the Stars had more less caught the flames not being on top of them basically. Of course it could go either way and there was a 3-1 I believe in the first 4 minutes of OT that probably should have went in for the Stars but with good luck it was missed and the flames just leaned on them after the 10 minute mark basically until they cracked all the advanced stats in the world will not tell you how that played out.

The players and interviews had zero interest in talking about the Oilers, they probably will by Tuesday go flames!

Wonder how much rent is gonna be in Chucky's head for the next 2 weeks, because Zack is gonna live there. If Klingberg did so much just think what Kassian does.

And suck it 1230.

Why would Chucky waste his time with a dipsh!t like Kassian? Are you comparing him to Klingberg? I think the Flames have some players ole Zack should be watching out for. If anything Tkachuk will be in Kassians head, if there’s any room in there.

Klingberg was simply a weak link that Tkachuk was exploiting. While the team appreciated the effort, Lucic stood up and said he was doing the fighting from now on. Kassian is the one that has Tkachuk living rent free in the remains of his head. But, he won't be able to do much about it. Not with Lucic, Guddy and even Ritchie standing in the way.

Should be a good series. Big test for both teams. Calgary didn't need its PP to win the series. A stellar goalie is the only reason it went to G7. Can't say I get why it took EDM to G7. LA was probably the 22nd weakest team in the West. Quick had 3 good games in him. And Brownie was the sentimental fave. Some good young talent, but really lack consistent D.

Not predicting anything about the BOA. EDM goaltending is tough to measure at this point. Leon and Tanev both are not 100%. Some questions about Tkachuk, but he seemed to play just fine in G7. More like the old Matty. Did Jarnkrok insult the hockey gods at some point? He managed (again) to hit players in from of a sprawling goalie. Let the BOA be his comeback tour.

Agree it’s going to be a great series. Smith has had a few good games but is so unpredictable, McDavid has proven he’s the best in the league when he wants to be. Calgary’s got the advantage in the defensive/ goaltending part but when Edmonton starts buzzing around they’re going to hard to handle.

Could certainly make an argument with his 5/5 point production. But it should technically go to Matthews. 50/50 in this era is unreal and even Trumps McDAvid this year IMO.

How is it unreal?? Goal scoring is way way up this year. 15 players hit 40 goals.
Player most valuable to his team should either be Shesterkin - who put up unreal numbers when the rest of the league was bleeding goals, or Kaprizov - who had an unreal season on an otherwise meh team.

Kassian only plays the first 1/2 the game then gives his spot up to McDavid’s double shifting. He’s such a team player.
Tkachuk already broke him.

Tkachuk is about as sharp as an orange. As is Kassian. difference is one plays top line for his skills and one just sometimes plays top line.
If 2nd pair Klinberg can get into Tkachuks head imagine what "First line" Kassian can do.

Kassian will be deployed every shift possible vs tkaturtle this round. Bank it. If they get coincidental roughing penalties who does it hurt more? And those 2 HATE eachother. simple bank. than the flames need a return for Kane in those events.
